Loaned to Aston Villa this winter without a purchase option, Marco Asensio (29) has revealed the reasons behind his PSG departure—primarily, a lack of playing time under Luis Enrique.
Once a key player for Enrique, Asensio found himself sidelined this season, leading him to seek more opportunities elsewhere.
“Nothing really happened! The coach simply made other choices and selected his players,” Asensio told The Mirror. “It happened frequently during the season, and I decided I needed to play and wanted a change.”
“Emery Sees Me as a No. 10”
At Aston Villa, Unai Emery played a crucial role in convincing Asensio to make the move, offering him a key role in his system.
“A major factor in my decision was my conversation with Unai. He told me he sees me as a No. 10. When I left Real Madrid, I felt that was the natural next step in my career, where I could feel comfortable and progress further. So when we spoke, and he saw me in that role, it was important to me,” Asensio explained, emphasizing that his transfer is “not a step back, but a big challenge.”
