Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon won’t see his son don the Azzurri jersey—at least for now.
Louis Thomas Buffon, a 17-year-old left winger currently playing for Pisa’s U19 team, has decided not to represent Italy at the international level. Instead, the young player, who holds Czech nationality through his mother, Alena Šeredová, has opted to play for the Czech Republic U18 team.
In an interview with La Repubblica, Gianluigi Buffon explained the reasoning behind this decision and fully supports his son’s choice, emphasizing that nothing is set in stone:
“With the Azzurri, the weight of the surname would have been overwhelming. People might have said he was given preferential treatment. Expectations would have been sky-high right away. This way, he can approach his career with a clear mind. And when he’s older, nothing will stop him from choosing Italy later on.”
A strategic decision that allows Louis Buffon to carve out his own path, free from the pressure of his father’s legacy. However, the door to the Italian national team remains open for the future.
