Big changes in Barcelona’s goalkeeping hierarchy: Wojciech Szczesny has officially been named the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
From Retirement to Undisputed Starter
Initially coming out of retirement to help Barça after Marc-André Ter Stegen’s serious injury, Szczesny (34) has now overtaken Iñaki Peña, who had been filling in as interim keeper.
Since his return to action, the Polish veteran has established himself as a key figure, bringing experience and stability to a defense in need of leadership.
A Strategic Move for Barcelona
This gamble has paid off for the Catalan club, which has successfully strengthened a crucial position mid-season. Head coach Hansi Flick confirmed the decision:
“Szczesny is our No.1 goalkeeper now, it’s confirmed. It’s not about Iñaki or Wojciech—it’s about the whole team. We always make decisions in the best interest of the squad. That has been my philosophy from the start.”
With this decision, Barcelona now has a clear leader between the posts, as they continue to push for success in the second half of the season.
