Real Madrid did not sign any defenders during the winter transfer window, despite a defensive crisis. According to Spanish media, the club’s decision was strictly financial.

Carlo Ancelotti looked uncomfortable when discussing Real Madrid’s lack of winter signings, as his squad is severely weakened with David Alaba, Éder Militão, Dani Carvajal, and Antonio Rüdiger all sidelined. Yet, the club opted against bringing in reinforcements.

Instead, Madrid has relied on internal solutions, pushing Aurélien Tchouaméni and Raul Asencio into makeshift defensive roles—an unusual approach, officially justified as confidence in the current squad.

Florentino Pérez’s Financial Strategy

According to Carrusel Deportivo, Florentino Pérez made this decision for economic reasons. While the club has funds available, he refused to engage in panic buys.

A move for Trent Alexander-Arnold was considered, as the Liverpool right-back will be out of contract in June, but Real Madrid prefers to wait until summer and sign him for free, following a strategy that worked with David Alaba and soon Kylian Mbappé.

While Madrid had a quiet winter transfer window, a blockbuster summer could be on the horizon.
